This “Earnest” runs two and a half hours with two short intermissions. Peterson and Alviso are the weaker links, as is the set, a traditional shortcoming at NTC. With a nearly flawless performance, Bretan is the standout talent in this cast. Shari Clover inhabits the pivotal role of governess Miss Prism. Canon Chasuble, and Tim Clover does a nice job of differentiating the two butlers, Lane and Merriman. Mark Shepard is laconically charming as country vicar, the Rev. Bromley’s stiffly coiffed Lady Bracknell is a formidable defender of social decorum whose every utterance is a stentorian pronouncement. In this production, the two girls are actually more believable characters than are Jack and Algy, whose extreme foppishness induces doubts as to whether his interest in women is anything other than abstract amusement. Rapid-fire dialog continues throughout the two friends’ extended riff in Act One is mirrored in Act Three by the objects of their affection, Gwendolen Fairfax (Julianne Bretan) and Cecily Cardew (Gwendolyn Phair). With a paper-thin premise involving intentionally false identities and a highly unlikely obsession with the name “Ernest,” the show is propelled by Wilde’s incredibly clever wordplay, first displayed by two young gentlemen of leisure, Algernon Moncrieff (Thomas Peterson) and his friend Jack Worthing (Lorenzo Alviso), whose assumed names give them more social freedom than they might otherwise enjoy. “Earnest” has been enduringly popular since its 1895 debut there is probably a production in process somewhere all the time. The author’s most well-known and arguably best theatrical work is among the most produced English-language classics, done probably more often than Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Some might call it among the most over-produced unlike “Midsummer,” which generally appears only once per year.
