This “Earnest” runs two and a half hours with two short intermissions. Peterson and Alviso are the weaker links, as is the set, a traditional shortcoming at NTC. With a nearly flawless performance, Bretan is the standout talent in this cast. Shari Clover inhabits the pivotal role of governess Miss Prism. Canon Chasuble, and Tim Clover does a nice job of differentiating the two butlers, Lane and Merriman. Mark Shepard is laconically charming as country vicar, the Rev. Bromley’s stiffly coiffed Lady Bracknell is a formidable defender of social decorum whose every utterance is a stentorian pronouncement. In this production, the two girls are actually more believable characters than are Jack and Algy, whose extreme foppishness induces doubts as to whether his interest in women is anything other than abstract amusement.
